HNE Recordings LtdĀ has just releasedĀ “Questions And Answers: The Atlantic Anthology 1987-1989”, a new three-CD collection from iconicĀ FOREIGNERĀ singerĀ Lou Gramm.
GrammĀ had been recording with Rochester, New York-based bandĀ BLACK SHEEPĀ since the early 1970s. Releasing two LPs forĀ Capitol,Ā GrammĀ met his future bandmate and songwriting partnerĀ Mick JonesĀ in 1975 whenĀ BLACK SHEEPĀ opened forĀ SPOOKY TOOTHĀ in Rochester.Ā JonesĀ was looking for a singer for his new band in 1976, andĀ BLACK SHEEPĀ having split at the end of 1975,Ā LouĀ was free to audition forĀ Mick‘s new group,Ā FOREIGNER. Releasing their self-titled album onĀ Atlantic RecordsĀ in 1977, and featuring solid gold rock classics asĀ “Cold As Ice”Ā andĀ “Feels Like The First Time”,Ā FOREIGNERĀ were an instant worldwide smash. Going from strength to strength, the band hit a commercial peak in 1984 with theĀ “Agent Provocateur”Ā album and the chart-topping power balladĀ “I Want To Know What Love Is”.
Perhaps choosing to return to a simpler rock format,Ā GrammĀ released his debut solo album,Ā “Ready Or Not”, in 1987. Produced byĀ Pat MoranĀ withĀ Gramm, it featured the hitsĀ “Midnight Blue”Ā andĀ “Ready Or Not”Ā among a collection of songs that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on aĀ FOREIGNERĀ record. Having come from a very musical family,Ā “Ready Or Not”Ā is very much a family affair, featuring contributions fromĀ Lou‘s brotherĀ Ben Jr.Ā on drums and his fatherĀ Ben Sr.Ā on trumpet. The core of the band wasĀ Lou‘s formerĀ BLACK SHEEPĀ bassistĀ Ben Turgon, who make a significant songwriting contribution to the album, plus guitar heroĀ Nils Logfren.Ā LouĀ also found time in 1987 to record a track for the soundtrack of teen horror flickĀ “The Lost Boys”.
After returning toĀ FOREIGNERĀ for 1987’sĀ “Inside Information”,Ā LouĀ released his second solo album,Ā “Long Hard Look”, in 1989. Capitalizing on the success of his debut, it was produced byĀ Peter WolfĀ (famed for his production and arrangement work forĀ Frank Zappa,Ā HEARTĀ andĀ Kenny Loggins),Ā “Long Hard Look”Ā built on the foundations set byĀ Lou‘s debut.Ā “Just Between You And Me”Ā was another huge smash, making No. 6 in the U.S. Hot 100, followed by the singleĀ “True Blue Love”. The album concludes with a cover ofĀ THE SMALL FACES‘ “Tin Soldier”.
AlthoughĀ GrammĀ only recorded two solo albums forĀ Atlantic, a third disc gathers together some of hisĀ Atlantic-era rarities, including two versions ofĀ “Lost In The Shadows (The Lost Boys)”Ā from the aforementioned soundtrack.Ā “Ready Or Not”Ā is represented by a “Rock Remix”, an “Extended Dance Remix” and an “Instrumental Remix”. Hit singleĀ “Midnight Blue”Ā was issued in various formats, including a very collectible transparent blue 12-inch single, which featured an “Extended Remix” of the track. A single edit ofĀ “True Blue Love”Ā has been selected fromĀ “Long Hard Look”. To promoteĀ Lou‘s 1987 debut,Ā Atlantic RecordsĀ released the very rare and highly collectible LP,Ā “Questions And Answers”, a promotional album distributed to radio stations featuringĀ LouĀ interviewed byĀ Dan NeerĀ as he discusses the genesis of theĀ “Ready Or Not”Ā record, and his career to date, in 1987.
