“As a fan ofĀ Ennio MorriconeĀ scores andĀ Sergio LeoneĀ movies, it’s got a bit of that outlaw vibe, with a cool psycho hillbilly stomp,”Ā CantrellĀ toldĀ Rolling StoneĀ aboutĀ “Atone”. “It’s been kicking around in my head for like 20-plus years, haunting me. Sometimes it takes a while for a good idea to find its best form. Such was the case withĀ ‘Atone’.”
“Brighten”Ā was produced byĀ CantrellĀ withĀ Tyler BatesĀ and engineerĀ Paul Fig. Special guests on the album includeĀ Puciato,Ā Gil Sharone,Ā Duff McKagan,Ā Abe Laboriel, Jr.,Ā Michael Rozon,Ā Vincent Jones,Ā Jordan Lewis,Ā Lola BatesĀ andĀ Matias Ambrogi-Torres. The LP includes a cover ofĀ Elton John‘sĀ “Goodbye”, which was approved by the music legend himself.
“‘Madman Across The Water’Ā is one of my favorite records of all time,”Ā CantrellĀ said. “Out of respect toĀ Elton, I wouldnāt include it unless he said it was okay. He’d played piano onĀ ‘Black Gives Way To Blue’, which I wrote forĀ LayneĀ [Staley], so I reached out toĀ Elton, he listened to it, and told me ‘You should absolutely use it.’ I got the signoff by the man himself. I couldn’t think of a better way to close the record!”

Jerry‘s upcoming effort will mark his first full-length release sinceĀ “Degradation Trip”, the epic solo album he made in 2002 with futureĀ METALLICAĀ bassistĀ Robert TrujilloĀ andĀ FAITH NO MOREĀ drummerĀ Mike Bordin.
CantrellĀ announced the new LP’s completion in anĀ InstagramĀ post in March.
Jerry‘s career outside ofĀ ALICE IN CHAINSĀ has consisted of two solo albums and contributions to major film soundtracks.Ā Cantrell‘s first solo album,Ā “Boggy Depot”, was released in 1998, followed by his second album, the aforementionedĀ “Degradation Trip”. In addition to his solo artist work,Ā JerryĀ has released music on soundtracks for several films, includingĀ “Spider-Man”,Ā “The Cable Guy”,Ā “John Wick 2”,Ā “Last Action Hero”Ā andĀ “The Punisher”.
Back in 2018,Ā CantrellĀ toldĀ BillboardĀ that he wasn’t in good headspace when he madeĀ “Degradation Trip”. “I was just really fucked up back then, to be honest with you, and you can totally hear it on that record,” he said. “It was done right before I got sober, and it was also done right when I was dealing with the death of my band, and then the unhappy coincidence ofĀ LayneĀ [Staley,Ā ALICE IN CHAINSĀ frontman] passing away right after I released that record. So it was not a good time in my life, and it totally comes across on that record.”
CantrellĀ added: “It’s a record I don’t listen to a lot anymore because of all those things I mentioned,” revealing that he got sober a year after it was recorded. He continued: “But it’s a record that’s important to me, and I’ll seeĀ RobertĀ andĀ MikeĀ every once in a while and they’re like, ‘We should do some fucking shows, man. SomeĀ ‘Degradation Trip’Ā shows.’ [Laughs] I tell ’em we’ll do it someday.”
ALICE IN CHAINSĀ regrouped in 2006 withĀ William DuVallĀ joining the band, and released its third LP withĀ DuVallĀ in the lineup,Ā “Rainier Fog”, in August 2018.
METALLICAĀ guitaristĀ Kirk HammettĀ spoke toĀ Classic RockĀ magazine about what he and his bandmates hope to achieve with their upcoming studio album. "METALLICAĀ has always been about bringing people together through music. I think the sentiment now is that people need music more than ever to bring everyone together and collectively celebrate that we've got to this point," he said. "There's a lot of division in the world, and hopefully thisĀ METALLICAĀ album will cut through the […]
