Dave Grohl‘s first-ever book,Ā “The Storyteller – Tales Of Life And Music”,Ā has toppedĀ The New York Times‘ Hardcover Nonfiction list and the Combined Print & E-Book Nonfiction list.
Earlier today,Ā GrohlĀ took to theĀ FOO FIGHTERS‘ social media to write: “Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that I would someday be a number one bestselling author, but it’s those same wildest dreams that I’ve followed since the day I picked up a guitar. Honored.”
“The Storyteller – Tales Of Life And Music”Ā was released on October 5 viaĀ Dey Street BooksĀ andĀ Simon & Schuster. In the book,Ā GrohlĀ shares what it was like growing up as a kid with big dreams in Springfield, Virginia, and how he lived out those dreams making music on the world stage. The book features anecdotes aboutĀ David Bowie,Ā Joan Jett,Ā Iggy PopĀ andĀ Paul McCartney, as well as stories about the time he played drums forĀ Tom Petty, went swing dancing withĀ AC/DC, and performed at the White House.
Regarding how he chose what to include inĀ “The Storyteller”,Ā GrohlĀ said in a recent trailer for the book: “I could write an entire book about the bandĀ SCREAM. I could write an entire book about my time inĀ NIRVANA. The idea was to choose the stories that best described what it’s like to be behind the curtain and on the inside of the music, from the drum stool looking out. To play music, have this beautiful family, travel the world, meet people from all walks of life, I never take any of this for granted, believe me.”
GrohlĀ has been one of the most beloved and respected figures on the international music scene since his recorded debut withĀ NIRVANAĀ on 1991’s generation-definingĀ “Nevermind”.Ā GrohlĀ took center stage withĀ FOO FIGHTERS‘ 1995 self-titled debut, the first of 10 albums in a massive 12-Grammy-winning streak, most recently including the No. 1 album-sales-chartingĀ “Medicine At Midnight”.Ā GrohlĀ has traveled the planet doing the thing he loves most ā playing rock n roll marathons for tens of thousands of ecstaticĀ FOO FIGHTERSĀ fans. But when the pandemic necessitated going into lockdown,Ā GrohlĀ took stock of how he might use this moment of pause. Channeling his creativity into writing and using his remarkable skill for storytelling, in May 2020 he wrote a moving reflection forĀ The AtlanticĀ on missing the thrill of live music during the COVID era that went viral. Then, ending a longstanding self-imposed exile from social media,Ā Grohl‘s newĀ InstagramĀ account @davestruestories was born. This new platform became a way forĀ DaveĀ to share his extraordinary (and funny) stories with fans and fellow music nuts and now,Ā GrohlĀ is set to build upon that momentum with his first book.
Grohl‘s new book is as much a celebration of music as it is about the moments that have molded him into the man he is today. From hilarious childhood mishaps, touching family moments, leaving home to see the world at eighteen, to spectacular stories aboutĀ NIRVANA,Ā FOO FIGHTERS,Ā David Bowie,Ā Joan Jett,Ā Iggy Pop,Ā Paul McCartney, playing drums forĀ Tom PettyĀ onĀ “Saturday Night Live”, performing at the White House, and even swing dancing withĀ AC/DC, with all love, laughs, loss, and embarrassments along the way,Ā “The Storyteller”Ā is a fascinating look at a life lived loud.
“There is a common thread that runs throughout everything that I do: storytelling,”Ā GrohlĀ said. “Whether in song, documentary film or on the page, I have always felt compelled to share moments from my life. This inclination is a huge part of what excites me creatively but also as a human being. In March 2020, realizing that my day job with theĀ FOO FIGHTERSĀ was going to go on hold, I started anĀ InstagramĀ account (@davestruestories) and decided to focus all of my creative energy on writing some of my stories down, something I love doing but I’ve never really had the time for. I soon found that the reward I felt every time I posted a story was the same as the feeling I get when playing a song to an audience, so I kept on writing. The response from readers was a soul-filling as any applause in an arena. So, I took stock of all the experiences I’ve had in my life-incredible, difficult, funny and emotional-and decided it was time to finally put them into words.”
GrohlĀ has a well-earned reputation as a prolific collaborator: his various endeavors have includedĀ “Cut Me Some Slack”, written and recorded withĀ Paul McCartneyĀ andĀ Grohl‘sĀ NIRVANAĀ bandmatesĀ Krist NovoselicĀ andĀ Pat Smear;Ā THEM CROOKED VULTURES, formed withĀ LED ZEPPELIN‘sĀ John Paul JonesĀ andĀ QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE‘sĀ Joshua Homme, late legendsĀ David BowieĀ andĀ Lemmy KilmisterĀ ofĀ MOTĆRHEAD, as well asĀ Mick Jagger,Ā Neil Young,Ā Elton John,Ā NINE INCH NAILS,Ā Roger TaylorĀ andĀ Brian MayĀ ofĀ QUEEN, to name a few.
In 2013,Ā GrohlĀ made his debut as a feature director/producer with the acclaimed documentaryĀ “Sound City”, named for the Van Nuys, California studio whereĀ NIRVANAĀ recordedĀ “Nevermind”Ā in 1991, which would sell more than 30 million copies and transform the modern musical landscape. Premiering to unanimous raves atĀ SundanceĀ and achieving a 100%Ā Rotten TomatoesĀ rating,Ā “Sound City”Ā focused both on the history of the legendary studio and on the ongoing fight to preserve the human element of music. Hailed byĀ Peter TraversĀ ofĀ Rolling StoneĀ as an “exhilarating documentary about what makes life worth living,” byĀ The New York TimesĀ as “candy to several generations’ worth of rock fans” andĀ NPRĀ as “a celebration of just how unbelievably awesome it is to make rock music for a living,”Ā “Sound City”Ā has since been certified as a gold longform video by theĀ RIAA, while theĀ “Sound City – Real To Reel”Ā companion album took the 2013Ā GrammysĀ for “Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media” and “Best Rock Song” (“Cut Me Some Slack”).
GrohlĀ also directed the eight-partĀ HBOĀ docuseriesĀ “Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways”, which premiered in October 2014 and went on to win two of the fourĀ EmmysĀ for which it was nominated (outstanding sound mixing for nonfiction programming and outstanding sound editing for nonfiction programming). Described byĀ Grohl as a love letter to the history of American music,Ā “Sonic Highways”Ā was comprised of eight one-hour episodes, each chronicling the creation of one song onĀ FOO FIGHTERS‘Ā “Sonic Highways”Ā album, each written and recorded in a different American musical landmark ā Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville, New Orleans, New York, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.
