BLACK SABBATHĀ guitaristĀ Tony IommiĀ has revealed whyĀ Geezer ButlerĀ didn’t perform at the closing ceremony of this year’sĀ Commonwealth GamesĀ in Birmingham.
On August 8,Ā IommiĀ andĀ BLACK SABBATHĀ singerĀ Ozzy OsbourneĀ reunited in their original hometown of Birmingham, England to perform the band’s classic songĀ “Paranoid”Ā ā preceded by a truncated version ofĀ “Iron Man”. They were joined by two musicians from the band’s final tour,Ā Adam Wakeman, who played bass and keyboards, and drummerĀ Tommy Clufetos.
Speaking to
BirminghamLiveĀ aboutĀ
Butler‘s absence from the event,Ā
IommiĀ said: “I don’t think he wanted to come over as he hadn’t been well with Covid. He’d been on holiday to Kenya and to Italy and had had an accident on a boat, cracking or breaking a rib about three weeks ago, so he was not quite in fine fettle to come over to play. It’s a shame because we’d talked for a long time about the possibility of playing at theĀ
Commonwealth Games.”
A few years ago,Ā OzzyĀ said that he was open to the possibility of aĀ SABBATHĀ reunion at theĀ Commonwealth Games, tellingĀ ITVĀ that it “would be fantastic” to play at the the opening ceremony for the 2022 Games. “WithĀ BLACK SABBATHĀ or on my own,” he said at the time.
Late last month, IommiĀ took part in theĀ Commonwealth GamesĀ opening ceremony.Ā IommiĀ and acclaimed saxophonistĀ Soweto KinchĀ led a “dream sequence” piece, titledĀ “Hear My Voice”, based on the lead track from the 2020 filmĀ “Trial Of The Chicago Seven”Ā at the event on July 28. AfterĀ TonyĀ andĀ SowetoĀ played an extended instrumental lead-in, they were joined by theĀ City Of Birmingham Symphony OrchestraĀ and a 700-strong community choir.
The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth GamesĀ saw around 4,500 athletes from 72 nations and territories compete in 19 sports and eight para-sports across 15 competition venues from July 28 July until August 8.
Sharon OsbourneĀ spoke about her husband’s appearance at theĀ GamesĀ onĀ Talk TV, telling the channel: “They asked us six months ago, andĀ OzzyĀ couldn’t possibly have done it till after his last operation. They sawĀ OzzyĀ was atĀ Comic-ConĀ and they said, ‘All right. Come on. Get him over.’ And we were, like, ‘All right.’ And literally it was six days from their phone call to getting him there. It was just incredible.”
TonyĀ said aboutĀ Ozzy‘s appearance at the event: “I never thought thatĀ OzzyĀ would be able to come and perform at theĀ Commonwealth GamesĀ because of his operation. And then when he said he was coming over we were asked to keep it all a secret so that nobody would know.”
Last year, IommiĀ was asked byĀ The Mercury NewsĀ about the possibility of anotherĀ BLACK SABBATHĀ tour at some point in the not-too-distant future. He laughed and replied: “I wouldn’t think so. But it’s a strange thing withĀ SABBATHĀ ā how many times we thought we were withĀ Ozzy, then we had [Ronnie James]Ā Dio, then back toĀ Ozzy, thenĀ DioĀ again, and thenĀ Ian GillanĀ andĀ Tony MartinĀ andĀ DioĀ and back toĀ Tony Martin. It’s gone backwards and forwards at different stages. So, you just never know.
“I think it’s highly unlikely that we’d get back onstage again,” he said. “It certainly wouldn’t be touring. We’d only do so many shows, if anything.
“I would like to play with the guys again. But I can’t see that happening.
“The reason we stopped touring in the first place was basically my fault, because I had to be careful of my health,” IommiĀ explained. “When you book a tour ā and it’s always an 18-month tour ā it doesn’t sound a lot when you talk about it at first. But when you get out there, and you are touring, it’s bloody hard work. And it wasn’t particularly good for my health, because of the blood cancer. So, I said, ‘Look, you know, this should the last tour, I think.’ But I really do miss it. I really miss playing onstage. I miss seeing the audience.”
IommiĀ revealed his cancer diagnosis in early 2012, shortly afterĀ SABBATHĀ announced a reunion tour and album. He underwent treatment throughout the recording of the disc, titledĀ “13”, and the subsequent tour to promote it.
